P.S.Rogers, the 0.in C.of Lok Ma ühan, telephoned and informed me that the motor boat had gone on patrol at 10.00 hours that morning and had not returned; also that she was last seen going up the river, but that it was uncertain whether she had gone aground up- stream or bad returned unobserved and gone aground in Deep Bay. The grounding of the motor boat in Deep Day is of such frequent occurrence that I did not anticipate any danger in that quarter,as she has hitherto always got clear with the next tide. However,in case she might have gone aground up the river I instructed P.S. Rogers to take out a patrol and search the river notthwards, This he did and remained out the greater part of the night without any
fudding
trace of the boat or cres.

3. At 07.30 hours,21.7.26,P.S.Rogers telephoned and informed me that he had just heard from Low that the motor boat was aground in G.1.,above Losu, and that the whole of the crew had been arrested by strike pickets and taken to Sham Chim. This information was later amplified by a message 1 received from S.I.Hoare, who„bad just seen a är tavidson, of the Chinese Customs, who had witnessed the grounding of the motor boat the previous afternoon, but kept the knowledge to himself. Mr Davidson said he was not aware that there was a telephone at Lowu Railway Station, but even so he could have at least informed the police on duty there.
Upon receipt of the message from P.S.Rogers acquainting me of what had happened 1 at once telephoned and informed the U.S.P. (K) who instructed me to stand-by for orders. At 10.30 hours I received from him a commication in the form of an ultimatum, which I was required to have translated and sent to San Chun with all
possible speed. The following is the commication referred to:- From Hon.Captain Superintendent of Police.
To Officer Commanding Troops at Sham thun.
Iou are hereby called upon to return the whole crew of No. 10 Police Motor Boat to Losu bridge,British Territory, immediately. The crew consists of 2 Europeans,1 Indian and 4 Chinese.
